This little story takes place in 1911. It’s kind of a pop punk melody with Doo Wop music that takes place in 1911, so it basically exists in three decades. The thing with the song is that the listener knows so much more than the characters in the song.
lyrics
Minnie Mae
Verse 1
Well I first met her back in April
when the pink carnations started to bloom
and it was unthinkable not to be romantic
cuz she's unsinkable like the Titanic
and I wonder how it looks in her room
And now I know I want to hold her
Tell her that she means everything
I can talk for hours with her
as I watch her flowers wither
waiting till they bloom again next spring
Pre-Chorus
And though they have reached the South Pole
No one's ever seen a heart so cold
as mine when I know I'm not with her
and that I'm getting cynical and old
Chorus
But the last century has slipt away
We had the industrial revolution
are other revolutions on the way?
In this era of confusion?
I'm not sure if I worry that much
About the latest news of the day
cuz my mind isn't occupied with such
I just want my Minnie Mae
Verse 2
She listens to Alexander's Rag band
but I don't know songs like that
They are way too modern
just how much can God earn
if his kingdom is so rich when times are bad?
And she talks about Huckleberry Finn
and I can't believe how close we are
We're unstoppable when we're together
and it's a love that will last forever
just like the Russian Czar
Pre-Chorus
And though they stole the Mona Lisa
No one can steal her smile
Cuz she's a girl with roses in her hair
and no one can top that lass's style
Bridge
She was born in the 1800s
and her life is filled with joy and wonders
But sometimes she cries at the moon
like there is a war coming soon
My Minnie Mae
hey hey hey
I'll tell it on the telegraph
She’s the only one that can make me laugh
