This is a song about being deceived. About just being the pawn in someone’s game or the loser in someone else’s card game where they keep changing the game, this person deceiving you can be a politician, a teacher, a parent, a therapist, a lover, a friend and it can even be yourself. It’s also about staying strong in spite of it.
lyrics
Changing the game (With Every Card)
Verse 1
You know I trusted you
Everything seemed right at the time
Who disgusted me disgusted you
And you seemed out of sight in my mind
But now I see through your lies
See through the entire masquerade
And I realize
you cannot pay back all that I've paid
Trust should go two ways
Agreement should be mutual
I expected unexceptional
Got the usual
Now you're the king
You still keep keeping on
Still think you can move me
Like I'm some kind of pawn
Chorus
I believed every word
You gave me meaning
A string of hope
and something to believe in
And every morning I wake
I have to tell myself this:
Though you couldn't have less help
You don't have to feel helpless
Verse 2
Every little word you'd say
I found so much truth in it
I know it was just a game you'd play
and I'm the one that's losing it
A game of poker and the Jack
is making every move seem hard
And you're the joker in the pack
changing the game with every card
Trust should go two ways
Agreement should be mutual
I accepted unacceptable
Became neutral
Now you're the king
You still keep on
Still think I'm being moved
Like I'm some kind of pawn
